Monarch Live!

Monarch Live!
Originally uploaded by Hope8.

My audio/visual savy coworker found a really creative use for our equipment! Under the netting to the left is our butterfly tower.Inside, the monarch chrysalides are hanging from bridal netting on an artificial Christmas tree branch.A video camera is below, recording all the action.
We had watched this butterfly emerge but wanted to give her some " alone time" as she dried her wings. He set up the video camera to the VCR so that we could watch all the action as it was happening on TV. And we have a video record of the whole emergence! She was beautiful .We set her free with her brothers and sisters. What a wonderful end to the school year.

This is so exciting for everyone! Imagine being able to see all of this and recording it at the same time. This project has been so much fun! It has been great to be able to share things with each other.

I've raised butterflies before, but never have I seen such excitement from the kids. Of course, we had to go out to find more caterpillars when our others died. The kids have found butterfly eggs, a caterpillar, and a moth. They learned so much! They now have a vested interest in keeping these things alive.

This is a beautiful rendition of the life cycle and use of the video equipment. I'm happy to hear that your students were so excited.

Wow! My kids would love this!
We've gone the traditional route, raising butterflies from Insect Lore larvae. All 5 emerged healthy and have flown off to do their thing. Thanks to all of you, I have lots of ideas for next year. School's out (almost) but I am looking forward to seeing all the projects. I will have a really diverse group of learners in September so differentitation will be a challenge for sure. This project was terrific for focusing my summer learning! Susan and Sarah - many thanks for giving us this opportunity!
